13th to 15th November, 2024
The 2023 Global Peace Index highlighted a concerning decline in global peacefulness, with Sub-Saharan Africa experiencing significant challenges. Ghana, in particular, has seen a notable drop in its peace rankings, driven by escalating youth-led protests and socio-economic frustrations. Recognizing the vital role of young people in peacebuilding, the UN Security Council’s Resolution 2250 and the African Union’s Peace and Security Council emphasize the need to engage youth in these processes.
As the 2024 elections draw near in Ghana, it is crucial to recognize the pivotal role that young people can assume in both peacebuilding and political participation. Therefore, establishing platforms and implementing transformative resilience programs that actively contribute to the engagement of youth in conflict prevention and peacebuilding in Ghana is essential. The proposed National Youth Conference on Peace and Security is designed to empower the voices of Ghanaian youths, emphasizing their active role in political processes and their contributions to peacebuilding initiatives. This aligns with the objectives of SDG 16, and Aspiration 4 of AU Agenda 2063, which advocates for the promotion of peace, justice, security, and robust institutional frameworks.
